The GM Hydramatic 6L80 transmission heralds a significant change in the design of automatic transmissions at General Motors. All previous GM automatic transmissions were virtually all based on hydraulic controls, and received increasing electrical elements as they modernized. A horsepower revolution spawned by GM's increasingly powerful Gen. The 6L80 was approved for use in these vehicles weighing up to lbs.

The 6L80 denotes that the transmission is a 6-Speed, Longitudinally mounted, and for lbs. Newer to the transmission world is its use of direct clutch-to-clutch shifting and the total lack of bands. Because of this, the 6L80 - despite having two or three more gears than its predecessors, is unexpectedly short in length. Maximum engine input torque for the 6L80 is ft. The case is die cast aluminum.

The 6L80 features a generously deep first gear for an automatic, making for favorably powerful starts from a standing stop. The transmission lacks a direct-drive, but features two overdrive gears. The gearing spread is a very capable 6. Recommended fluid is Dexron VI and typically accepts a 10 quart thru Like earlier automatics, the 6L80 features one line pressure tap available for testing and diagnostic purposes.

The torque converter is a fluid turbine drive and - like those on its predecessor transmissions, the THC, R4, 4L60, and 4L80E - features a lock-up pressure plate for direct mechanically coupled driving from the engine crank. As with earlier Hydramatics, the 6L80 will accept either the mm or mm torque converters. Engine torque rating increases minimally, but the output torque rating of the transmission jumps up by nearly ft.

The use of three-way solenoids and variable bleed solenoids for improved shift quality. The transmission is automatically shifted featuring performance algorithms to minimize upshifts during closed throttle driving to prevent unnecessary shifting. For some, only a manual gearbox will do — they want to row through the gears themselves, and for projects destined for track days on road courses, a stick shift is the way to go. But for the vast majority of would-be swappers, an automatic transmission is the preferred gearbox.

TCI will build you a TH or TH in configurations from mild to wild, in various tailshaft lengths, and forward or reverse shift patterns and even transbrake-equipped for dragstrip duty.

However, the torque converter bolt pattern and pilot length is different on the LS transmission applications. The Chevrolet Performance catalog click here to download your own copy lists an extensive array of torque converters designed to pair their LS and even Gen V LT engines with the correct converter for both 4L60 and 4L80 type transmissions.

For owners of classic musclecars already equipped with a serviceable, original automatic, this will be the simplest and least expensive solution when doing an LS swap. Between the two options, a flexplate swap using the original converter will be cheaper, but considering that the new engine is likely going to have a very different powerband than the one coming out, a torque converter with a more aggressive stall speed is likely to be the more desirable way to go.

A properly built version can handle 25 percent more than that.

The R4 represents a Rubicon between the old and new — while it gained an additional overdrive fourth gear and lockup torque converter capability over its TH ancestor, it retained mechanical, rather than electronic operation. The R4 was renamed the 4L60 inthen evolved into the 4L60E when electronic control was added.

Moving to an overdrive gearbox does have some special considerations to keep in mind in terms of space and controlling lockup and line pressure, though, and in the case of a fully electronic transmission, overall control. Your chosen transmission and engine combination will also determine what you need for transmission control. Factory-style LS throttle bodies have no provision for a kickdown or TV cable, so some degree of finagling and fabrication will be required to use a TH or R4.

Once you start mixing and matching engines, computers, and electronically controlled transmissions, though, you may end up wishing for a turn-key solution. Chevrolet Performance offers multiple transmission control systems for both factory-style EFI setups and carbureted LS engines, as well as 4L60 and 4Lbased performance automatic transmissions.

They are designed just like our LS fuel injected controller kits in that they are pre-calibrated to function after they are hooked up and plugged in. The software if you decide to use it is very easy to navigate and most people are able to make the changes they want without having to refer to the help section.

Doing the transmission right for your particular LS swap will involve not just the big items like the gearbox itself, the crossmember, driveshaft, converter, and flexplate, but supporting components such as the shifter and control electronics.

Though aftermarket support for all aspects of doing an LS swap in popular vehicles is good and growing Holley is a good exampleyou can expect some level of fabrication and adaptation will be necessary. TCI offers a pressurized cleaning product that is designed specifically for back-flushing coolers and lines that will be reused, to help prevent the introduction of sludge and metal shavings into your new transmission.

The fluid level is critical as well: make sure that the transmission is not underfilled. The GM 5LE transmission is very common in cars of a certain age and, as those cars continue to age, more and more of them are finding themselves in the shop for transmission faults. Please be aware that this article assumes some but not a lot of working knowledge of cars and terminology. Before we get into the faults and foibles, I thought I'd include a little bit of background information on this transmission.

I've also included a nice video overview below. There are many vehicles that use the 5LE, but some of the more common instances include the BMW 5 Series E39L Range Rovers, and a range of Cadillacs—check the end of this article for a more comprehensive list of vehicles. If the level is low enough, the transmission might struggle to get enough fluid to apply the clutches, hence the slipping.

LS Swap Automatic Transmission Guide

Common places for leaks to occur are around the sump metal pan underneath the gearboxfrom the rear seal around the output shaft, or from the pump seal. Unfortunately, a leaking pump seal would require the removal of the transmission to remedy. This does tie in nicely with the next fault, however. Hint: When topping up the oil on any automatic transmission, ensure the engine is running, otherwise the transmission will appear to be overfull when it could be anything but.

Behind the pump seal is a bush that is responsible for keeping the torque converter steady and central as it spins. However, in some cases, this issue can cause damage to the torque converter neck and even the pump itself, and replacing those parts is sure to run you up into a four-figure bill! Hint: There are other things that could cause your transmission to leak from the bell-housing, however none of them can be repaired without removing the transmission.

If it's leaking from the front, it has to come out. It may seem counter-intuitive, but transmission slippage when warm is an entirely different issue to slippage when cold.

As mentioned above, the transmission fluid expands when it heats up. This not only causes the oil level to rise, it also causes it to become thinner.

Automatic transmissions employ a lot of pressurised components that maintain their pressure through a variety of seals and valves. When those seals start to wear, transmission fluid can escape, lowering the pressure.

In cases where a transmission is worn but not completely gone, it may drive fine when the oil is cold and viscous. When that oil heats up and thins out, it can start finding its way out of these worn seals and valves, causing a lack of pressure when applying a clutch. Below is a video on replacing the clutch pistons in a 5LE.

Due to GM's use of "moulded pistons" rather than regular seals, re-sealing is not as simple a task as it would be in other transmissions.

GM 6-Speed 6L90 MYD Hydra-Matic Automatic Transmission

Hint: 5LE moulded pistons cannot simply be seated in place without the proper tools. Attempting to do so will almost certainly damage the pistons.

Typically limited to larger four-wheel drive vehicles such as Range Rovers, the output has been known to wear down to the point of no longer functioning.

Worse still, the entire drive of the vehicle passes through this shaft, so when it wears down, the vehicle no longer drives at all—and tends to make a horrendous racket when it tries. Our 4L80e and 4L85E transmissions are one of the strongest in the world.

The problem is, the stock stuff tends to blow up when subjected to real power. That's why he's a huge supporter of the R overdrive automatic. Blessed by GM's Hydramatic Division with superior guts, it only takes a few well-chosen tweaks to make a R live behind as much as 1, hp.

Got a supercharged Rat motor in your daily driver-like Robbie Whitlock's '66 Chevelle? Carr can build you a R that'll take the gaff. We stopped by Carr's California Performance Transmission and came away impressed by the R's clear advantage over competing four-speed automatics. First off, the R is an analog transmission. That means, unlike the 4L80E and its lesser "E" siblings, it isn't dependant on a computer to tell it what to do.

This fact alone means the cost of a rebuildable core is much lower, a savings that quickly trickles down to your wallet. While it is true that the R4 is also analog and rebuildable cores are priced as low as the THR, it has a fatal flaw in the form of a weak input shaft and drum assembly. Its lightweight aluminum construction limits capacity to around hp, less if the car is heavy. The hassle is the drum is a very complex part and so far nobody has invested in the tooling required to manufacture a superior aftermarket replacement.

On the other hand, the R is free of this inherent deal breakers. Oh sure, it's ripe for improvement, and this story outlines just a few of the steps Carr takes to bring one up to snuff. We'll show you that in a minute. But the R has other inherent advantages over the R4. Let's make a list:. The R's 2.

built 6l50 transmission

The R4's ratios 3. Not a good sign. The R is free of such nonsense and is ready for big-block overdrive blasting with only minor beefing. The R4 case requires an adapter behind non-Chevy blocks. By now it should be clear there's a pretty strong case-pun intended-for the R.
